In a bid to address the growing demand for swimming lessons, Prince Albert City Council made a strategic decision during budget deliberations to give residents first dibs on registering. With the high demand, particularly among younger children, this move gives residents whose tax dollars pay to operate the pools the first chance at registration.
Swimming lesson registration is set to open at 7 a.m. on December 13, 2023, for spots over the Christmas Break and early 2024 season. If spots remain following the first wave of registrations, non-residents will be allowed to register.
“There is a big demand for swimming lessons. With the construction of the new Aquatic and Arenas Centre, we expect to be able to expand on all our programming options, including offering more swimming lessons to meet regional demand,” says Curtis Olsen, Sport Recreational Manager for the City of Prince Albert.
Approximately $6.58 million will be directed toward the operation and maintenance of City recreation facilities in 2024, and like cities across Canada, each facility is subsidized to some degree by property taxes. “A portion of every resident’s tax bill goes towards these operating costs,” said Olsen. “To recognize this contribution, those who pay are being offered the first opportunity to register in 2024.”
