The Prince Albert Historical Society will be expanding on the Indigenous History Room at the Historical Museum over the next year following the hiring of a full time Indigenous Researcher. Lindsay Sorell was chosen for the position and started with the Historical Society on June 15, 2021. The position was made possible through an $80,000 grant received by the National Indian Brotherhood Trust Fund. The grant will fund the position to complete the research and develop displays and interactive elements within the Indigenous History Room.
"It’s exciting for us to be in a position to expand on the work that was done on the Indigenous History Room," said Michelle Taylor, Curator with the Historical Society. "With a full time researcher we can dedicate the resources to get the research right and take time to consult with local Knowledge Keepers."
Lindsay Sorell is an âpihtawikosisân (Métis) artist, researcher, and writer whose family has lived in kistapinânihk and area for seven generations, one of the many descendants of James Isbister and Margaret Bear. Sorell's research is driven by the desire to see justice and healing for all peoples
"I know from listening to my grandparents that there are many untold stories in our region," said Sorell. "I am excited to serve in this role to bring these stories to light - to honor the stories of our Indigenous ancestors that hold knowledge, strength, healing and inspiration for our future. Most of all, I am looking forward to spending time sitting with Elders and Knowledge Keepers."
Lindsay was the founding editor of Western Canadian media and art journal Luma Quarterly, has won numerous awards for her research, and is currently completing her MA in Modern Languages and Cultural Studies as a distance student with University of Alberta. Lindsay also recently illustrated a children’s book written by Maria Mayerchyk and Lesia Savedchuk titled Anna's Dream, to be released in 2021.
The work in the Indigenous History Room is scheduled to be complete by March, 2022. With the grant from the National Indian Brotherhood, this room has received over $142,000 in grant funds.
