Prince Albert, SK - Prince Albert has been named Saskatchewan’s Most Active Community for the 2024 ParticipACTION Community Challenge, presented by Novo Nordisk! With being crowned, Prince Albert has been awarded $15,000 that will be used to provide support for sport, recreation and physical activity programming within the community.
Throughout June, Prince Albert was consistently one of the top active communities in the province, based on the number of committed and participating organizations and individuals. At the end of the month, Prince Albert had 11 organizations register 164 activities, programs, and events attended by 6,558 participants! Along with this, 126 individuals pledged to get active on their own for the community!
“In taking on this initiative, it was made evident right away that sports, recreation and physical activity can be seen as a cornerstone of this community,” City of Prince Albert Recreation Programmer Robin Mkangwana said. “With this, the main approach was to encourage people to take advantage of all the opportunities available throughout June, and to encourage organizations to join the pursuit of being able to give back to local programming.”
From here, Prince Albert was selected to be in the finalist stage where the PRC Department submitted their claim as to why Prince Albert should be named Saskatchewan and Canada’s Most Active Community. The combination of the community getting active and this submission to ParticipACTION led to Prince Albert taking home the provincial prize
“The Community Challenge provided an incredible opportunity to emphasize physical activity to our community members in pursuit of a noteworthy goal, as well as showcase and now celebrate the community on this national platform,” Mkangwana said.
The Community Challenge was a national physical activity and sports initiative that aimed to encourage communities to get their members active throughout the month of June. The Parks, Recreation & Culture (PRC) Department at the City of Prince Albert entered the community into the Challenge, where residents and local organizations were called upon to get involved and contribute. Individuals could contribute by taking the pledge to be active for the month. Organizations could get involved by signing up, registering their June activities, and tracking the number of participants.
