Prince Albert, Sk. - The City of Prince Albert is pleased to announce the return of the free Playground Program for the summer of 2021 for 5 to 12 year olds, after the program did not run in 2020 due to restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Playground Program will be offered in 10 locations from July 2nd until August 20th. This year the Playground Program will be featured in a new location, as well as the addition of Inclusive Days, Outdoor Adventure Day and the return of KidzFest on a new date.
The Alfred Jenkins Field House is the new location for the Playground Program. The Field House exterior amenities that will be utilized include the largest outdoor playground in western Canada, basketball courts, beach volleyball courts and new soccer pitches. The other locations for the Playground Program offer water features. Locations that include Spray Parks are Kinsmen Park, Crescent Acres, Midtown, West Hill, Miller Hill, Lions Park and Westview. Paddling Pools are featured at the Crescent Heights and Hazeldell locations.
All 10 locations will be staffed by two highly trained playground supervisors. All locations operate Monday to Thursday from Noon to 5:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Kinsmen Park location also operates Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Playground Program offers a variety of activities including science, arts, recreation, literacy, drama and more. Leaders have each day’s activities planned out in advance with certain theme weeks throughout the summer.
Social distancing, wearing of masks when indoors, hand washing and safety protocols will be part of the program.
Inclusive Playground Days at AJFH
The City is pleased to announce in conjunction with Hope’s Home and supported by a Framework in Action Grant from the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA), the inaugural Inclusive Playground Days at the Alfred Jenkins Field House. These dates, July 6, July 20, August 3 and August 17 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day, will welcome children with disabilities to let them have exclusive use of the many inclusive elements at Alfred's Playground at the Field House.
The JumpStart playground is the only one of its kind in the province and has many unique features designed specifically for children with disabilities. While the inclusive elements of the playground will be reserved during this time, the other two wings of the playground will remain open to the general public.
The staff of Hope’s Home will bring their clients and City Playground Program Staff will assist any other youth in the city and area with a disability during the events.
