Pedestrians and drivers will notice new rapid flashing beacons in four crosswalk locations throughout the City of Prince Albert. The beacons are pedestrian-activated and have rectangular flashing lights to alert drivers that someone is crossing the road. Once the pedestrians cross the street, the drivers can proceed even if the lights still flash.
“Pedestrians should still look both ways to make sure that traffic is yielding to them, although there are advanced indicators to make drivers stop,” says Evan Hastings, Transportation Manager for the City of Prince Albert.
Drivers should come to a complete stop while the rapid flashing beacons are activated. Make sure to look both ways to see if a pedestrian is ready to cross. Once the pedestrian has crossed the road, you can proceed even if the beacons are still flashing.
If you are a pedestrian, click the button, wait for the yellow flashing beacons to start flashing, and look both ways before crossing the street. Watch the video where our Transportation Manager demonstrates how the rapid flashing beacons work: https://www.citypa.ca/traffic/
