Prince Albert, Sask. - 1.32 km of roadway is now open in the West Hill. The new Marquis Road West roadway stretches around the West Hill area from 7th Avenue to 10th Avenue west and from 10th Avenue West to 28th Street. The arterial roadway will improve traffic flow for the West Hill Neighbourhood and serve key facilities like the Alfred Jenkins Field House and the Victoria hospital, which is identified for a $300 million expansion.
This roadway was prioritized in the 2017 Transportation Study to facilitate expected increase in traffic volume in the area over the next 5 to 10 years.
"The new roadway is an important arterial connecting the east to the west, making traffic flow much easier going to the Victoria Hospital. Building the new roadway was crucial for accommodating the increased traffic in the area by channeling the traffic around the city rather than through the residential areas," says Mayor Greg Dionne.
Construction on Marquis Road West started in 2020 with the installment of underground infrastructure (water, sewer, storm). After enough time was allocated for natural settlement to occur, the road was constructed and paved this fall. The final top lift of paving will be laid in 2022. Drivers will notice a small edge at either end of the new surface for a year.
New stop signs were installed at the intersection of 6th Ave W and Marquis Road as well as 10th Ave W and 28th Street West (at the AJFH). Motorists are reminded to pay attention when entering these new intersections.
