The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency will be conducting FireSmart/fuel mitigation around the Pine Grove Correctional Centre at Little Red River Park starting this fall to be completed by December 15th.
FireSmart planning and fuel mitigation are conducted in partnership with the City of Prince Albert, SPSA and through funding from the Disaster Mitigation Adaptation Fund and aims to increase community wildfire preparedness through activities such as fuel and vegetation management, FireSmart initiatives and education, and planning.
The FireSmart work done this fall at Little Red will include contracting crews using chainsaws within identified blocks to thin the pine and spruce trees so that fire will not burn as intense within the treated areas, making it easier for suppression efforts to be successful. Thinning projects have shown to be effective in reducing the intensity of wildfire and preventing tree crown to crown spread. The result would be a clean, parklike area that is still aesthetically pleasing but will not carry wildfire well. Thinning projects are not designed to stop fires however it is an important FireSmart step to reduce the risk from wildfire to the park.
The fuel mitigation work will encompass approximately 6 HA of the Park and the City anticipates that there should be very little disruption to park users.
