The City of Prince Albert is pleased to announce that the City’s Information Technology Division has been selected as the recipient of the Award of Excellence for the implementation and roll-out of a cloud based GIS system. The award was presented to the IT team today at the regional Esri Canada User Conference in Regina.
The City was selected based on its unique approach of a cloud based GIS system. With this approach it opens the GIS system up to all City departments rather than just highly trained technicians making it flexible, cost-effective and user-friendly. Role-based access unlocks data and functionality for average employees to view and edit eliminating the need for hardware costs and reducing the need for specialized employees trained to use the system.
“We have a single GIS technician that has the training and expertise to build out our interactive maps, but we train employees to login and update the data as needed,” said Owen Pratt, IT Manager for the City of Prince Albert. “It makes for a much more flexible system that can be updated easily and quickly making the data open and more valuable for all users.”
“With this option available to us, it made a lot of sense,” added Pratt. “The cloud based approach and the skill and commitment of our GIS supervisor, Ivan Kozoletov, has contributed significantly to the successful roll-out of several mapping applications over the last year.”
The City’s GIS maps are used in a variety of areas for both internal and external purposes. Examples include property assessments, cemetery records management, parks & recreation, planning & development, asset management, road closures and water & sewer infrastructure management.
Esri Canada presents Awards of Excellence annually to organizations or individuals across Canada for their outstanding achieving in the application of GIS. The award is presented at regional Esri Canada User Conferences across the country.
