The City of Prince Albert is thrilled to announce the completion of the Rotary Adventure Park, which opens its ziplines on Monday, July 31, 2023, at 1 p.m. With a total investment of $1.2 million, this extraordinary project has been made possible by the collective efforts and generosity of various contributors:
- The Rotary Club fundraising contributed $500,000,
- Malcolm Jenkins Family Foundation donated $400,000,
- The City of Prince Albert contributed $280,000.
The Rotary Adventure Park and Zip Lines has over 4 acres of play space for people of all ages and offers a wonderful escape into the backwoods to play and work out. The construction utilized over 300 cubic meters of topsoil and over 250 cubic meters of Play Sand, ensuring a safe and engaging environment for kids to explore. With a diverse range of play pods/zones, including four 100-foot Zip Lines, the Rotary Adventure Park is poised to become a popular community destination, providing an unforgettable experience for residents and visitors to Prince Albert. The overall capacity of the Playground is for 300+ children.
The 9 play zones are as follows:
- Zone 1 – Passive Tot area with sand table, sand digger, spinner, and ride-on bumble bee.
- Zone 2 – Children's swing area featuring an oodle swing, 2 infant swings, 2 young children swings.
- Zone 3 – Hurricane Mega Towers: Hive and beltis skyway with hurricane mega-tower.
- Zone 4 – Aquarius Webscape: Viper and Mobius Rock Climber Wall.
- Zone 5 – OTS Group Fit Structure: Adult Ninja Warrior Course.
- Zone 6 – Accessible Rail Rider.
- Zone 7 – Older children swings.
- Zone 8 – GSX: Silo Scrambler Climber and Nu Edge Climber.
- Zone 9 – Zip Lines.
"Little Red River Park is one of the only Urban Municipal Parks in Canada to have these kinds of community involvement and investments to build an even more inviting and enjoyable destination for nature enthusiasts, families, and individuals seeking a memorable outdoor experience," says Mayor Greg Dionne. “A big thank you to the Rotary Club of Prince Albert, Malcolm Jenkins, and the Community and the City of Prince Albert for all your hard work.”
“The park has been on a 3-year journey of legacy building change based on the Little Red River Masterplan, which has helped guide and direct us to this point. What an exciting time for Prince Albert and the area to experience something so unique that it will be talked about for years,” says Tim Yeaman, Parks and Open Space Manager for the City of Prince Albert.
Little Red has also seen some infrastructure upgrades this summer to enhance its visitors' overall experience. The parking lot has seen notable improvements, with a total investment of $127,100, resulting in 126 extra parking spaces, ensuring greater accessibility for park-goers.
Furthermore, a welcoming Warm-Up Shelter, sized at 16 X 24, is set to be completed by the end of August, providing accommodation for up to 22 individuals. The total investment of $50,000 demonstrates the commitment to making the Park a prime winter destination for cross-country skiers and snowshoers.
Plans are underway for Year-Round Washrooms, with an investment of $140,000, scheduled for installation by the end of September. These facilities will be fully accessible to accommodate all visitors. A well-equipped Camp Kitchen near the Playground is in progress, with a total investment of $180,000, including a generous in-kind donation of $40,000.
In 2022, the Park experienced one of the most significant and exciting transformations thus far by installing three new pedestrian bridges at the Toboggan Hill, Cosmo Lodge and the old Sport's Council Bridge location in the north-central area of the Park. The total investment for this project is $1.81M. All three bridges, introduced during the spring of 2022, are steel construction left to naturally patina, a process of the steel oxidizing and creating a natural protective barrier resulting in a lower corrosion rate. The patina finish was chosen to blend in with the Park's natural settings, and, in case of any future graffiti, the steel can be pressure washed to remove the problem area and the steel left to patina again. This project and other upgrades align with the Little Red River Park Master Plan. The improvements are helping Little Red River Park be a place where healthy relationships with the land and community are promoted and nurtured.
Lastly, the 400 meters of a new paved pathway was completed in 2022. The path connects the Cosmo Lodge, Rotary Adventure Park, and Toboggan Hill areas within this section of the Park. The new asphalt pathway will help to stabilize and reduce the concerns about erosion along the riverbank. The pathway work was partly completed with a generous Federal Canada Community Revitalization Fund grant. A portion of the grant, totalling $142,500, was applied towards these efforts in 2022. These paths will be used by pedestrians, joggers, and bikers and, in the winter months, provide a solid base for a portion of the cross-country ski trail.
The Little Red River Park is an important part of the Community in Prince Albert. It offers unique opportunities within an amazing 1200-acre Urban Park Space that otherwise would not exist if not for Community Clubs' generosity, partnerships with local businesses and the commitment and support of the City.
For residents who want to visit the new playground, the Little Red Transit Route is underway and will run until September 9th! For more transit information, visit the City of Prince Albert Transit Page.
