Prince Albert, Sk. – The world sports spotlight will again shine on Prince Albert in 2024 and 2025.
Softball Canada announced today that the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has awarded the 2024 WBSC Men's Softball World Cup Group Stage and the 2025 World Cup Finals to Canada, and more specifically to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Both events will be held at Prime Ministers Park in July 2024 and 2025.
The 2024 Group Stage will consist of three groups of six teams that will have qualified from their respective continental qualifier. The top two teams from each group and two wild card entries will advance to the 2025 World Cup Finals.
"Our host committee and the City of Prince Albert are pleased to be chosen yet again to host these most prestigious WBSC softball World Cup events. The best men's softball players in the World are coming, and we can't wait to show them our local hospitality, great facilities, and area attractions that Prince Albert is very proud of. Thank you, WBSC board of directors, for the confidence and support in giving us another opportunity to show you and the participating countries what our local Saskatchewan community can do when it comes to hosting major events like these upcoming WORLD events!" said Derek Smith and Ian Litzenberger, who led the local bid committee.
Prince Albert is no stranger to hosting international softball events, having hosted the U18 Men's World Cup in 2018, where Canada finished fourth. The current infrastructure at Prime Ministers Park resulted from the 2018 event.
"This is an exciting time for Prince Albert! We made a significant investment in the Prime Ministers' Park facilities in 2018, and now that investment will reap a significant payoff with not just one world event but two events back-to-back in consecutive years! This is another 'feather in the cap' for Prince Albert and our ability to organize world-class events. The WBSC saw what we were able to accomplish back in 2018. Winning this bid shows their confidence in our city," said Mayor Dionne.
Team Canada is currently ranked second in the WBSC official rankings after capturing the silver med at the 2022 Men's Softball World Cup.
The Host Committee will release further information as planning for the event gets underway.
