A new overnight warm-up location, The Meeting Place, is open every night to provide a safe and welcoming space during the harsh winter months. The City of Prince Albert was approved for a one-time grant of $150,000 to provide additional services for Prince Albert’s homeless community during the winter of 2024-2025, including access to warm space overnight.
On December 16, City Council approved using funds from the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation to support this essential service. In partnership with the Salvation Army and The Safe Shelter for Women, The Meeting Place has been active since end of December, offering a critical refuge for individuals in need. To date, it has provided overnight accommodations for more than 160 individuals.
“With extreme cold temperatures expected this week, we urge anyone needing a warm place to seek shelter at The Meeting Place. No one should have to face these dangerous conditions alone. If you know someone who may need help, please encourage them to come in or connect them with available resources.”
This initiative reflects a collaborative approach to community safety and well-being. Key features include:
- Onsite Security: Regular patrols in and outside the building ensure the safety of clients, staff, and community members.
- Visible Police Presence: Enhanced overnight patrols contribute to the safety and security of the area.
- Bylaw and CSO Support: Early morning presence to address unintended consequences and support a seamless transition for clients.
Thanks to additional support from the Riverbank Development Corporation and Métis Nation Saskatchewan, upgrades have been made to improve building accessibility, ensuring The Meeting Place remains inclusive and accommodating.
The warm-up location will operate nightly until April, providing critical relief during the coldest months for individuals who may not access the Emergency Shelter.
