Prince Albert City Council has approved a one-time property tax abatement for property owners impacted by a tax increase greater than $700 in 2021. The decision follows the 2021 revaluation where some homes experienced as much as 30% increases in their property taxes. Of these properties, increases ranged from $780 to $5,999.
2021 was a revaluation year and property assessments were updated to reflect property values as of January 1, 2019. Due to the particular market changes in Prince Albert, the overall impact was that middle value homes decreased in value causing fewer higher valued properties to carry a larger portion of the tax burden.
“This abatement corrects an oversight at the time of implementation,” said Mayor Greg Dionne. “It was not clear at the time that these homes would see such a dramatic increase and this offers some measure of relief to those impacted.”
This abatement is a one-time reduction to address the sudden increase in property taxes following the 2021 revaluation. It would not impact assessed values and therefore it should be noted that this is not a permanent reduction in property taxes going forward.
