The City of Prince Albert is pleased to share a video and webpage that highlights the work to date of the Artists in Communities program. Since 2020, this program has grown to provide ongoing support to 7 community-engaged artists as they develop long-term arts programming, residencies, and projects with local organizations.

Artists in Communities stems from the City of Prince Albert’s Municipal Cultural Action Plan. The plan identified a need for more community-engaged art programming. At the same time, a group of artists wanted to work with communities, but needed assistance to begin this type of practice. Based on these findings, a one-year mentorship program was designed with longtime relational artist, Lynda Monahan. In 2021-22 she established connections between artists and organizations, guided artists through their first programs, and shared approaches to building trust and relationships that blossom into creative thought and expression.
In 2023 we continued developing this locally-built model of supporting artists through peer networking, regularly meeting with Elder Liz Settee for guidance and knowledge sharing, and professional development through presentations and discussions with artists in SK who work in community settings. Additionally, curatorial support is provided to artists as they develop community-based projects in their practices, such as exhibitions, mentorships, residencies, and deeper program engagement.
We believe that relationships and meaningful connections open avenues for creativity and strength. This holds true in all aspects of the program. Mentorship from Judy McNaughton, Northern Artistic Director of Common Weal Community Arts has been crucial in the administration and direction of Artists in Communities.
Artists require environments to safely grow and deepen their practices while working with various communities. Professional development and guidance from Guest Artists and Elders builds capacity for artists’ knowledge, leadership, and confidence, in turn nurturing our local arts ecosystem and increasing access to the arts for marginalized or underserved groups in our city.
Artists in Communities is part of the City of Prince Albert Municipal Cultural Action Plan (MCAP) and is supported by funders SK Arts, SaskLotteries, and the Community Initiatives Fund, and partners Common Weal Community Arts, the Mann Art Gallery, and All My Relations Photography
