The Prince Albert budget committee has concluded four days of budget deliberations today with a decision to adjourn and schedule a future meeting to consider further options to reduce spending.
Deliberations started Wednesday, November 17, 2021 to consider the proposed 2022 capital and operating budgets as presented by City Administration. These budgets cover a substantial portion of the City’s operations including core functional areas such as recreation, police, parks, fleet, fire, streets and roads, transit, traffic, playgrounds, arts and community clubs.
Committee members reviewed each line of the City’s budget in detail. “We had a chance to discuss many aspects of our operation with Administration and decisions were made to trim spending in many areas. What this review process has shown us is that there is not a lot of room to trim without cutting into services,” said Mayor Dionne. “There are a lot of important projects in this budget that add value to our residents, but we understand the importance of keeping property taxes low. There is still work to be done and we want to consider options before we can release a final budget.”
The Sanitation, Landfill, Utility and Airport budget are scheduled to be considered December 1-3, 2021. Final recommendations from all Budget Committee Deliberations are expected to be considered at the December 13, 2021 City Council meeting.
