Prince Albert City Council will consider a report from Administration at the Executive Committee meeting Monday that addresses the future of the Kinsmen and Steuart Arenas in Prince Albert. The Aquatic and Arenas Recreation Centre is under construction now. It will include two new artificial ice surfaces bringing the total number of artificial ice surfaces in Prince Albert to five.
The report details booking at each facility and the demand for various user groups, including hockey, lacrosse, skating and private rentals. Prince Albert’s three arenas are at 99.8% capacity (4485 of 4494 available hours) for prime-time ice bookings, with another 1622 hours of additional ice time booked at surrounding communities.
“It is clear we do not have enough facilities to meet the demand in our community for hockey and lacrosse,” said Jody Boulet, Director of Community Services for the City of Prince Albert. “By maintaining the Kinsmen operation from September to March, we will ensure a fourth ice surface to meet the demand out there.”
The four ice surfaces will be in addition to the four volunteer-driven Community Club natural ice arenas. The report recommends that the Steuart Arena discontinue operations as a recreation facility, noting that current bookings will be accommodated at the new Recreation Centre. Options for the use of the Steuart Arena will be considered in a future report.
Executive Committee recommendations, if approved, will be forwarded to an upcoming City Council meeting for final decision.
