The City of Prince Albert received notice on August 8, 2023, of the intention of CUPE 882 to commence strike action starting August 10, 2023, beginning with a refusal to train management, contractors and coworkers.
With this formal notice, strike action can escalate without further notice up to and including a complete withdrawal of services.
“This is obviously disappointing. It is clear that no matter how much we give, they want more,” said Kiley Bear, Director of Corporate Services for the City of Prince Albert.
“We bargained in good faith for several months and engaged in constructive and meaningful discussions. We presented an offer of 11%, which is the best in the province, and it still isn’t enough. We have a responsibility to the taxpayers of Prince Albert. We will not ask them to pay more. ”
There is no impact to services at this time. The City of Prince Albert has prepared backup plans to ensure operations continue as usual in the short term. Updates will be provided if service interruptions are expected.
Residents are asked to visit www.citypa.ca/strikeupdate for service updates and other clarifying information on the City’s offer, including accurate details on the City Council wage increases over the last several years.
As of today, there are no interruptions to the following services:
- Kinsmen Water Park/Frank J Dunn Pool
- Alfred Jenkins Field House
- City Hall
- Arts Centre
- Bylaw Enforcement
- Building Inspection/Permit Approvals
- EA Rawlinson Centre
- Concessions
- Arenas
CUPE 160, which covers outside workers and operations such as garbage and recycling services, is not impacted at this time. Negotiations are ongoing with this union.
