Following budget deliberations this week, no decisions have been made that immediately impact the future of the Steuart Arena.
In March 2023, City Council approved the closure of the Steuart Arena following the opening of the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre. The new leisure centre adds 1500 hours of prime-time ice in Prince Albert, absorbing 93% of all regional ice time bookings. With just 124 remaining regional ice booking hours, it is not clear that the demand is there for a fifth ice surface.
“We are hearing from at least one user group that they believe there is enough demand to justify keeping the arena open,” said Jody Boulet, Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture. “We will be reaching out to all user groups to discuss the issue and invite them to put forward proposals for our consideration.”
The breakdown of users at the facility are:
If the arena is to remain operational, significant capital investments and operating costs are estimated at:
- $610,000 New Roof
- $150,000 Other capital improvements
- $170,000 annual operating costs based on full booking of all ice hours.
At this time, the Steuart Arena will not operate following the 2025 winter/spring season however the City will continue to evaluate options for the future of the arena. No decisions have been made that will immediately rule out its future use as an artificial ice surface.
“We are not rushing to a decision,” said Mayor Powalinsky. “We are prepared to consider all reasonable proposals to keep the facility open, but it is important to keep in mind that the evidence in front of us so far does not support keeping it operational. If the user groups have information they want us to consider, we are, of course, open to hearing from them.”
