Prince Albert’s 22.6km Rotary Trail Officially Complete
Prince Albert, Sk
An ambitious, multi-year, multi-agency project has come to completion in Prince Albert. The last section of asphalt was laid on the Rotary Trail today, a nearly 23 km, 10 ft wide, multi-use trail that wraps around the perimeter of Prince Albert. The Trail started as an idea of a few community members who envisioned a dedicated trail that would provide a safe, off-road option for cyclists and pedestrians.
Created in partnership between the Prince Albert Rotary Club and the City of Prince Albert, the trail has been a project 19 years in the making.
“The trail has been a real community effort,” said Dave Fischl, Rotary Trail Committee Chair and founding member of the original fundraising committee. “First and foremost I need to acknowledge the commitment from the Rotary Club who provided early and ongoing support for this project at the outset. Their leadership combined with commitment from the City to build and maintain the trail were instrumental in its completion.”
“Many organizations, businesses and individuals have been involved in this project,” added Fischl. “From property owners that border the trail, to city officials, members of council, businesses and non-profit supporters, it’s been a true community project.”
The total construction cost of the trail is estimated at approximately $3.2 million. Major funders included the Rotary Club of Prince Albert ($200,000), the Federal Government ($500,000), the provincial government ($300,000), Northern Lights Development Corporation ($100,000); Husky Energy ($375,000) and B&B Asphalt ($100,000+ in-kind repair and maintenance for 8 years).
“The trail is well-used by all members of our community and provides a free year-round recreation option for everyone,” said Mayor Greg Dionne. “It is my pleasure to be here today to share in this achievement with everyone and to also thank Husky who made the final contribution to complete the trail.”
