Prince Albert, Sk. – The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) has selected Prince Albert’s Rotary Trail as their 2020 Parks and Open Space Award recipient. The award recognizes excellence in the planning, design and development of a private or public park or open space in Saskatchewan.
Mayor Greg Dionne, Dave Fischl, Rotary Trail Committee Chair and founding member of the original fundraising committee accepted the award yesterday on the Rotary Trail on behalf of the project from Jody Boulet, SPRA Director for Cities and City of Prince Albert Director of Community Services.
“The completion of the Rotary Trail last year was a major milestone for our community. It is an incredibly popular free and accessible recreation space and I’m proud of the role the City was able to play in support of its construction and maintenance.” said Mayor Greg Dionne. “I would like to thank the SPRA for recognizing what a significant achievement this was and of course to Dave Fischl and the Rotary Club for championing the project over the years.”
The Multi-Use Recreation Trail Committee started the project in 2001 with the Rotary Club joining as the main sponsor and steward of the Trail. The 10 foot-wide paved trail now encompasses the city after it was completed in October, 2019. Thousands of Prince Albert residents on a year-round basis use the Rotary Trail in a variety of activities including fund-raising events.
The Parks and Open Space Award is part of the SPRA’s RECognition Program that pays tribute to those individuals and communities who have made outstanding and extraordinary contributions to the parks and recreation industry in Saskatchewan.
