Janaya and Jolissa Trudel pair up to form a vibrant folk-roots sister-duo, embodying both joy and depth in one double-batted swing. Their soul-stretching lyrics, homelike sound, and airtight harmonies are a force to be reckoned with. Since the successful release of their debut album “Grounded and Light” in 2017, Jay & Jo have toured Canada from coast to coast, taken part in Breakout West's showcase at Americanafest in Nashville in 2019, and been crowned “Roots Artist of the Year” at the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards, 2019. In the midst of the pandemic and great hush of the arts, they released their hopeful album “Victory” in July of 2020 and have been finding every way they can to share it since. Here is a preview.

A special partnership with the Saskatchewan German Council. Toured through OSAC’s Arts on the Move program.
Scherenschnitte (scissor cuts) is an art form where silhouettes are cut from one piece of special black paper with scissors or knives with no ‘hangers’- unattached pieces. Scissor cutting has a long history in German folk art; immigrants brought Scherenschnitte to North America in the 17th Century. Reflecting the Canadian artists in Scissor Cuts/ Scherenschnitte, this collection of works ranges from traditional German Scherenschnitte represented by Waltraude Stehwien, a German immigrant, to papercut evolved into sculpture by Jess Richter- second generation born in Canada.

Mann Art Gallery Exhibits & Events
![Carol Wyle art](/en/news/resources/eNewsletter/May-2021/Mag-1.jpg)
The Mann Art Gallery presents They Didn't Know We Were Seeds by Saskatoon-based artist Carol Wylie until May 29th. This exhibition consists of eighteen portraits of Jewish holocaust and residential school survivors. In Jewish tradition, eighteen represents the word 'chai' which means life. Themes including trauma, ongoing recovery, shared pain, and the indomitable human spirit, are central in Wylie's work. With numbers of holocaust survivors dwindling, and the same eventual loss of residential school survivors, these portraits remain and continue to reflect the strength and courage of these individuals.

For the past nine years, the Mann Art Gallery has presented art by local high school students in the Project and Education Studio Galleries of our beautiful space. This year, during the typical High School Juried Art Show period (April-May 2021), we are determined to showcase and celebrate the artistic achievements and creative vision of talented students in a new, hybrid format—both an in-person and virtual exhibition! We are excited to host student’s work not only in the gallery for visitors to appreciate, but also online, where artwork has the potential to reach viewers around the world. Students have the option of only submitting a digital image of a work, or the physical work itself; all artworks will be viewed online until May 29.
