Nominations for the 2018-2019 Golden Shovel Awards are now closed.
The Golden Shovel Awards have been introduced to raise awareness of the need to help neighbours clear snow from their sidewalks, especially if they are elderly or have health or mobility restrictions.
Lend a Hand
If you have a neighbour that has mobility restrictions, lend a hand by clearing their sidewalks in the winter.
If you have a neighbour, a friend or a relative that clears your sidewalk in the winter consider nominating them for the City’s Golden Shovel Awards. All you have to do is write a letter to the City telling us your story.
The Good Samaritan will receive a letter from the Mayor of Prince Albert thanking them on behalf of the entire City for making the extra effort to not only clear the sidewalk for their neighbour, but for all the pedestrians and meter readers that use the sidewalks throughout the winter.
The Good Samaritan will also receive a golden key chain as a token of the City’s appreciation, and their name will be entered into a draw to receive one of the following prizes:
- A $100 gift certificate to the Alfred Jenkins Field House;
- A $100 gift certificate to the E.A. Rawlinson Centre;
- Vouchers for six Raider Hockey Games;
- Two adult green fees at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course
Two draws are made each winter season.
To nominate a person, send an email or letter to the addresses shown below. Remember to include the first and last name of the person you are nominating and their mailing address.
Excerpts from this year’s nominations:
“I live in BC but my Mom lives next door to Owen, (I'm here visiting her). He is the most sweetest man ever. He shovels her sidewalk in the front, along with her half the driveway and also the sidewalk in the back from the house door all way to back fence.
He does this every day it snows. But not only that, he takes her garbage cans out to back on pick up day and brings them back to the house.
He helps my mom with fixes in her house and him and his wife check on my mom who will be 80 in July.
Even though he is up in age also he helps my mom and I don't worry so much about her. I could never thank him enough for his kindness but I seen the advertising for this shovel award and thought this way I can. If there was an award for citizen of the year, it should go to him.
Please consider him because he deserves the award.” (Submission for Golden Shovel Award winner Owen Rance).
“I would like to nominate this couple for the Golden Shovel award. They have been shovelling my driveway & sidewalk since I moved here 8 years ago. I am a senior and cannot do this. They do my driveway before they go to work. It is so nice to have such caring neighbors. They are so deserving of this award.”
“When we have a heavy snowfall Dave brings his shovel and snowblower down and clears my sidewalks and driveway. He then does behind my garage and then some for a neighbor who had a heart attack.”
