Secondary Suites (Basement Suites)

Secondary suites, commonly understood as basement suites, are a form of housing that can be put in single family homes across the City.  These rental units are a form of housing frequently considered by homeowners as a way to generate extra revenue.

Secondary suites offer greater affordability and choice in terms of rental accommodations in the City.  The City of Prince Albert is very supportive of homeowners interested in pursuing this type of development.  Of primary concern for the City of Prince Albert is that homeowners have access to the proper information regarding secondary suites.

In order to create a secondary suite, there are several bylaws and building codes that need to be followed to ensure the safety and comfort of those that will be living in the suite.

Regulations for Secondary Suites

In the City of Prince Albert, one suite for rental accomodation is allowed within a single detached dwelling. (It is illegal for a home to contain more than one suite in addition to the main dwelling unit.)  These suites are allowed in any residential zone. Each suite must be inspected and approved by both the Buiding and Fire Inspectors.  If you are creating a suite in a house, a building permit is required.
