Lauren Haubrich to Present at WCDP in Durban, South Africa

Prince Albert, Sk. – City of Prince Albert Aquatics Programmer Lauren Haubrich has been selected as a Presenter at the World Conference on Drowning Prevention (www.wcdp2019.co.za/) in Durban, South Africa October 8th to 10th. Haubrich will present to the conference on educating lifeguards about the hazards of working in sun and heat.

Haubrich and the staff at Kinsmen Water Park have been working with Sun Smart Saskatchewan on the sun safety of lifeguards and have presented their resources at previous international conferences. In 2016, Sun Smart Saskatchewan surveyed pool managers and lifeguards across the province to learn about knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of lifeguards. The following summer a pilot program was introduced by Haubrich and staff at Kinsmen Water Park, including the creation of a video to educate and inspire lifeguards in the province about sun safety awareness. This program has drawn the attention of the WCDP leading to Haubrich presenting during the 2019 event in South Africa.

WCDP 2019 is hosted by the International Lifesaving Society to continue to work towards addressing the World Health Organization’s 2014 Global Report on Drowning. The conference is a convergence of people and projects aimed at addressing a highly preventable public health challenge.

Delegates for the 2019 WCDP include members of the International Life Saving Federation, the WHO and members from lifesaving organizations around the world. Haubrich’s presentation is an opportunity to share an initiative spearheaded by City of Prince Albert staff that can improve the health and safety of lifeguards and lifesavers – from Bondi Beach in Australia to outdoor pools across Singapore.

“The City is proud of our aquatic staff with their involvement in the program to improve sun safety with lifeguards initiated by Sun Smart Saskatchewan”, said Jody Boulet, Director of Community Services. “And to have Lauren selected to present this program in South Africa to world leaders is an honour for her and the City of Prince Albert and reflects the work our aquatics staff does.”

Haubrich attended WCDP 2017 in Vancouver as a member of the Canadian delegation that attended the Young Emerging Leaders Workshop.
