Settlement reached in Domtar Assessment Appeal Case

Prince Albert Sk. - Prince Albert City Council has authorized the settlement of an outstanding assessment appeal case with Domtar over the valuation of the Pulp Mill site, which it purchased from Weyerhaeuser in 2006. The settlement applies to valuations of the property for 2009 and 2010. A settlement of $5.1 million was negotiated by the City’s legal team and formally approved by the two school boards involved and approved by City Council at the March 27 City Council meeting. The City’s portion of the settlement is $2.85 million, the Sask. Rivers Public School Division is $1.58 million and the Prince Albert Catholic School Division is $678,403.

Kinsmen Ski and Snowboard Centre Closed for remainder of season

Prince Albert, SK. – The Kinsmen Ski and Snowboard Centre at Little Red River Park will remain closed for the rest of the season. The Centre closed on Monday, March 13 due to mechanical issues with the Ski Groomer. The slopes need to be groomed daily to ensure the safety of its patrons. The Ski groomer is undergoing mechanical repairs and will not be in service until next ski season.

Pruning Ban for Elm Trees Takes Effect April 1st

Prince Albert, SK - Residents are reminded to prune their elm trees by March 31st, or to delay until early fall, as the provincial ban on pruning elm trees will be in effect between April 1st and August 31st. The ban ensures that elm bark beetles, which transmit Dutch Elm Disease (DED), are not attracted to the pruning cuts when these beetles are most active. DED was first discovered in Saskatchewan in 1981 and continues to be found in more areas of the province every year. DED is caused by a fungus that clogs the tree’s water conducting system, which eventually causes the tree to die, usually within one or two seasons. The early symptoms of the disease usually appear by July when the leaves on one or more branches wilt, curl, turn yellow and then die. The only effective management strategy for the elm bark beetle is to deprive it of its breeding habitat.
